In recent weeks, Nigerians have been experiencing some relief at the fuel pumps following price reduction announcements by major suppliers. Both the Dangote Refinery and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) have slashed petrol prices, aiming to ease the financial strain on consumers.
Dangote Refinery’s Price Adjustment
The Dangote Refinery, a major player in Nigeria’s oil sector, recently introduced a ₦65 per litre refund to marketers who had purchased petrol at higher rates. This move was designed to ensure that the benefits of lower prices reach the end consumers without unnecessary delays.
NNPCL’s Petrol Price Reduction
Following Dangote’s decision, the NNPCL cut its petrol pump price from ₦945 to ₦860 per litre at its retail outlets. This adjustment reflects the company’s commitment to making fuel more affordable across the country.
Why Many Nigerians Are Still Paying Higher Prices
Despite these reductions, many filling stations continue to sell petrol at higher rates, leaving consumers frustrated. As a result, transport costs remain high, and the cost of living has yet to improve significantly.
In cities like Ibadan, commercial drivers have welcomed the price cuts but are calling for further reductions to help sustain their businesses. Some fuel stations cite logistics challenges and old stock purchased at higher prices as reasons for not immediately reflecting the new prices.
Experts Predict More Reductions by Mid-2025
Economic analysts, including Bismarck Rewane, Managing Director of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, suggest that petrol prices may continue to decline until June 2025 as competition between suppliers intensifies. This trend could offer much-needed financial relief to consumers in the coming months.
Retailers and Marketers React
The Petroleum Retailers Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has praised the price reductions, describing them as a positive step towards reducing economic pressure on Nigerians. However, they emphasised the need for proper enforcement to ensure that independent marketers and filling stations adjust their pump prices accordingly.
Will Consumers Feel the Impact Soon?
While these price cuts offer hope, the real impact depends on full compliance by fuel stations and marketers. Many Nigerians will only experience actual relief when petrol is consistently available at lower prices nationwide.
The government and regulatory agencies must ensure that all marketers adjust their prices accordingly, allowing every Nigerian to benefit from the reductions. Until then, the disparity in pricing will continue to frustrate consumers, despite official announcements.
