President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to flag off the construction of five mini Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, on 30 January 2025.
Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, announced the news in a statement on Sunday. He described the event as “unprecedented” in Nigeria’s history, as it involves the groundbreaking of five LNG projects at once.
The Five LNG Projects
The projects include:
- Highland LNG
- LNG Arete
- NNPC Prime LNG
- NGML/Gasnexus LNG
- BUA LNG
According to Soneye, these projects align with the federal government’s gas policy and aim to boost Nigeria’s economic growth under the theme, “From Gas to Prosperity: Catalysing Nigeria’s Economic Growth.”
Details of the Projects
- NNPC Prime LNG: Built on 33 hectares of land, this small-scale LNG project is a partnership between NNPC Trading Limited and Silver Peaks Limited, with a 90:10 ownership split.
- NGML/Gasnexus LNG: This phased project will develop a 7.5MMSCFD Mini-LNG plant, transporting liquefied gas via trucks for industrial use.
- BUA LNG: A collaboration between NGML and BUA Industries, this plant will supply LNG to BUA’s cement factory in Sokoto.
- Highland LNG: Designed to serve industrial and commercial customers not connected to gas pipelines. It will also support the government’s push for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
- LNG Arete: A fully Nigerian-owned initiative aimed at providing secure and affordable LNG as an alternative energy source.
Economic Benefits
Soneye said these projects showcase the private sector’s support for President Tinubu’s vision of making gas a key driver of Nigeria’s economy. They aim to make energy more accessible and affordable while creating jobs and fostering industrial growth.
He also revealed plans to roll out more CNG stations across the country to provide cheaper and cleaner energy for transport and power generation.
“This is just the beginning,” Soneye said. “We are committed to utilising Nigeria’s gas resources to drive prosperity and reduce energy costs for all Nigerians.”
