President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerian youths that his government’s decisions, including removing fuel subsidies, were made to protect their future and improve the economy.
Speaking on Monday at the State House in Abuja during the inauguration of the Planning Committee for the National Youth Conference, Tinubu emphasised that ongoing economic reforms aim to create better opportunities for young Nigerians, who make up more than 60% of the country’s population.
‘Everything I Do Is for You’
Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to young people, stating, “Every decision I have taken is about you and your future. We removed the fuel subsidy to secure that future and create better opportunities.”
He acknowledged that many professionals are leaving Nigeria due to economic challenges. However, he expressed confidence that if the economy becomes stronger and people are empowered, fewer Nigerians would seek opportunities abroad.
A Call to Action for Youths
The President encouraged the 44-member planning committee to take their responsibilities seriously, assuring them that the government would act on their recommendations.
“This is your chance to shape the country’s future. Politics is about development, and you, the youth, are the heartbeat of this nation,” Tinubu stated.
He also noted that economic reforms are yielding positive results, with food prices reducing and the exchange rate stabilising.
“When we started, things seemed uncertain. But now, our economy is improving, investors are returning, and technology is advancing. The future is in your hands,” he added.
Government’s Support for Youth Development
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, thanked Tinubu for prioritising young people and ensuring their voices are heard.
He highlighted achievements such as the student loan scheme, the renovation of the Third Mainland Bridge, and efforts to clear the passport backlog as key steps towards a better future for Nigerian youths.
Samson Itodo, a member of the planning committee, said the upcoming National Youth Conference would focus on governance, economic transformation, artificial intelligence, climate change, and security.
The committee plans to hold virtual consultations, town hall meetings, and a national conference in Abuja to ensure young people from all regions contribute to shaping Nigeria’s future.
Looking Ahead
Tinubu reassured Nigerian youths that their ideas and concerns would be taken seriously.
“Look me in the face and tell me what is wrong. Be honest. We will implement your suggestions if they are in the best interest of the country,” he concluded.
