Petroleum marketers have revealed that the poor state of the East-West Road, particularly the Eleme section, is causing major delays in petrol distribution from the newly rehabilitated Port Harcourt refinery.
Road Issues Impacting Distribution
The Petroleum Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) stated that the slow pace of construction work on the road is disrupting the supply chain and affecting over 60 petrol stations that rely on the route for fuel deliveries.
According to PETROAN’s National President, Billy Gillis-Harry, many tankers use the road to transport petrol to various filling stations. However, the poor condition of the road is hampering the government’s efforts to ensure smooth distribution.
Marketers Call for Action
In a statement by PETROAN’s National Publicity Secretary, Joseph Obele, the association demanded compensation for filling station owners who are suffering losses due to the delays.
“The Eleme section of the East-West Road is critical for fuel transportation. The slow construction work is dangerous and negatively affecting the supply chain,” Gillis-Harry said.
Government Response
Reports indicate that the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, recently criticised the contractor for the delays and issued a seven-day ultimatum to speed up progress.
The delays in road construction are posing significant challenges to petrol distribution, impacting marketers and consumers alike. Addressing these infrastructure issues is essential to improving fuel supply across the region.
