Good news for Nigerian households: the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has decreased by 13.3%. Prices have fallen from ₦18,750 in December 2024 to ₦16,250 in January 2025.
Similarly, the price per kilogram of gas has dropped from ₦1,500 to ₦1,300. Depending on the location, some gas plants offer prices as low as ₦1,250 per kg, while others are at ₦1,400 per kg.
Olatunbosun Oladapo, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), emphasised the association’s commitment to promoting LPG use by making it more affordable. He noted that in the southwest, the average price to fill a kilogram of gas is around ₦1,250 to ₦1,300. He attributed the price stability to consistent supply and the fact that over 70% of Nigeria’s LPG consumption is produced locally, reducing reliance on imports.
Oladapo also addressed concerns about higher prices at certain gas plants, stating that while some sell at ₦1,210 and ₦1,250, the highest should be ₦1,300. He condemned those selling at ₦1,400 as exploiting consumers and highlighted the importance of daily price publications to prevent such practices. He added that the open market and competition are expected to drive prices down further.
This reduction in cooking gas prices is a welcome relief for many Nigerians, making daily cooking more affordable.
