On Saturday, September 14, operations at petroleum depots in Lagos were completely halted as the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union went on strike. The strike has resulted in a total stoppage of truck movements around Dockyard, Coconut, Kirikiri, and Satellite Town areas, including NIPCO and WOSBAB depots.
One of our correspondents at these depots confirmed that no trucks have moved since the strike began.
The strike reportedly follows an incident on Friday evening in Mile 2, where some policemen allegedly beat up and arrested tanker drivers. In response, the union has declared a strike across all depots in Lagos.
While the full details of the strike remain unclear, the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, hinted that the protest may be linked to the arrests. Union representatives have stated that they will not resume operations until their detained members are released.
Contacts within the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) union have assured that they are actively addressing the situation.
