The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the opening of additional Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in Abuja, Ibadan, and Abeokuta, advancing its nationwide rollout of cleaner and more affordable fuel alternatives.
In a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the company stated, “We are expanding clean energy access, one city at a time. We are now live in Abeokuta, Abuja, and Ibadan. With every new site, we bring Nigerians closer to cleaner, more affordable energy for everyday mobility.”
The initiative forms part of the national oil firm’s wider energy transition strategy aimed at reducing dependence on petrol while lowering transportation costs and emissions. NNPCL has been scaling up its CNG infrastructure, focusing particularly on Lagos and Abuja, two of the country’s busiest urban hubs.
In Lagos alone, permanent CNG stations are already operating in strategic locations including Lateef Jakande Road (Agidingbi), Agege Motor Road (Mushin), Lekki-Epe Expressway (Sangotedo), and Mobile Road (Apapa). In addition, six mobile CNG refueling points have been deployed across Fola Agoro in Shomolu LGA, Alapere, Marina, Agege Bypass (Idimangoro), Lakowe, and Odogunyan in Ikorodu.
Combined, the stations in Lagos and Abuja can dispense over six million standard cubic feet of CNG daily, enough to serve an estimated 15,000 vehicles per day.
The expansion signals NNPCL’s commitment to a cleaner mobility future, amid rising petrol prices and growing calls for cost-effective alternatives in Nigeria’s energy mix.
