The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC Ltd) has been cleared of allegations of setting fuel prices in Nigeria, with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA) revealed as the true authority behind price fixation.
A group of advocates, calling themselves “Friends of the Towers,” gathered in Yenagoa on Thursday to set the record straight. They praised NNPC Ltd for its achievements, urging Nigerians to appreciate the corporation’s efforts rather than criticising it.
Solomon Oseagah, a media practitioner and oil and gas industry expert, emphasized the importance of fact-checking. “Journalists should verify information before going to press,” he stressed.

Oseagah commended NNPC Ltd’s transparency under Group Managing Director Mele Kyari. “Mele Kyari has shown that the company is no longer opaque; it has opened its financial records to the public, a first since NNPC’s inception.”
He highlighted NNPC Ltd’s progress, including refining products and plans to roll out Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) by year-end. Oseagah also noted the corporation’s efforts in combating vandalism, with over 1,000 arrests made.
Ekerete Friday, Akwa Ibom State NSCDC PRO, corroborated NNPC Ltd’s success in reducing oil bunkering by 90% in his area of operation, also achieved in Bayelsa State.
Journalists present called on NNPC Ltd to provide timely information to protect its reputation.
