The Nigerian Navy has intercepted a wooden boat carrying approximately 100,000 litres of stolen crude oil along the Idiogba-Mahin coastline in Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State.
The operation was carried out by the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbokoda, following credible intelligence reports.
Details of the Operation
Captain Aliyu Usman, the Commanding Officer of FOB Igbokoda, confirmed the incident during an assessment visit to the site. According to Usman, the Navy’s Quick Response Team intercepted the boat, which was also equipped with discharge hoses and pumping machines.
The individuals behind the theft fled upon sighting the Navy’s patrol team, abandoning the boat and its equipment. The Navy has secured the vessel and taken samples of the crude oil for further analysis, following standard protocols.
Community Engagement
In addition to the operation, the Navy engaged with local communities to raise awareness about the dangers of oil theft. They emphasised the environmental harm and security risks associated with supporting such illegal activities.
Oil Theft: A National Challenge
Oil theft remains a serious issue in Nigeria, causing significant revenue losses. In 2022, the country lost an estimated 437,000 barrels of crude oil daily, resulting in $23 million in daily losses. Similar challenges continued in 2023, with losses totalling 65.7 million barrels in March alone.
The theft not only affects government revenue but also disrupts the operations of International Oil Companies (IOCs) and other industry stakeholders.
Efforts to Combat Oil Theft
To address this issue, the Nigerian military has intensified anti-theft operations, including initiatives like Operation Delta Safe and Operation Dakartada Barawo. These efforts, in collaboration with state governments, security agencies, and IOCs, have helped improve crude oil production.
In August 2024, Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, reported that production had risen to 1.6–1.7 million barrels per day, thanks to enhanced security measures. The military has also sealed off routes used to sell illegally refined petroleum products, achieving significant progress in the fight against oil theft.
As the Nigerian Navy continues its vigilance, these operations mark a critical step in protecting the country’s oil resources and ensuring economic stability.
