The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) hosted a webinar on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, under the theme “Driving the Energy Transition: CNG Conversion,” addressing safety concerns and best practices surrounding the deployment and usage of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Engineer Olalekan Omoniyi, Deputy Director at the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), reassured participants that CNG is among the safest fuels, but warned that sharp practices by unscrupulous operators could jeopardise users’ safety. Omoniyi emphasised the importance of verifying product information such as cylinder numbers, installation dates, and vehicle registration on each product’s nameplate to ensure safety. He urged regulators to enforce standards, including visual inspections of cylinders at refuelling stations, and proper certification of test centres and conversion centres.

Additionally, Zayyanu Tambari Yabo, Coordinator for the Presidential CNG Initiative, highlighted the significant cost savings for companies converting diesel-dependent trucks to CNG. Meanwhile, Oluwasegun Olajuwan of THLD Group stressed the importance of high-quality components in CNG conversion, following a recent explosion caused by substandard materials. Olajuwan advocated for knowledge transfer and regulatory approval to enhance the adoption of safe CNG conversion practices.

Ujiadughele Nosiediana Ray, Deputy Manager of Operations at NIPCO Gas, presented on “Developing a CNG Adoption Strategy” during the event. He proposed the establishment of a national gas pipeline network and the introduction of free vehicle health check-up camps to encourage CNG adoption. Ray also stressed the importance of skill development programs to create employment opportunities and address the shortage of skilled CNG technicians.

He called for strict enforcement against illegal and unsafe CNG conversions, advocating for subsidies to support companies promoting CNG adoption. Additionally, Ray emphasised the need to dispel misconceptions about the safety of CNG, highlighting that regular checkups are crucial to preventing facility and vehicle breakdowns. He pointed out that safety procedures, such as ensuring no passengers remain in vehicles during refuelling, are essential to avoid accidents. Ray concluded by reaffirming that CNG is the cleanest fuel available and will contribute to a healthier environment and improved quality of life.
