Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, the lawmaker representing Badagry Federal Constituency, has vehemently denied recent allegations linking him to fuel smuggling along the Nigeria-Ghana-Togo corridor. In a strongly worded statement issued by his Senior Legislative Aide, Faruk Tanko Tunga, Hon. Whingan described the accusations as “baseless, malicious, and politically motivated,” aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
The allegations stemmed from a viral video circulating on social media, claiming the lawmaker was complicit in smuggling petroleum products to neighbouring countries. The video further implicated certain individuals purportedly acting under the guise of the National Security Adviser’s office. However, Hon. Whingan has categorically refuted these claims, asserting that his only role in the matter was presenting a petition before the House on behalf of the Lagos State Youth Frontiers for the Advancement of Peace and Democracy.
Fuel Smuggling and Border Community Hardships
Nigeria’s border closure with Benin Republic since August 2019 has significantly impacted legitimate trade, especially in border towns like Badagry. While law-abiding traders have suffered, illicit smuggling routes particularly those in Oja-Odan, Ogun State allegedly remain operational with the backing of powerful figures within the Nigerian Customs Service.
Hon. Whingan has consistently advocated for policies that address the economic hardships faced by border communities, particularly the youth. As part of these efforts, he moved a motion in the House of Representatives, calling for a thorough investigation into the Nigerian Customs Service and its top officials, including the Comptroller General. His motion specifically sought to uncover how smuggling networks continue to thrive despite border enforcement measures.
Who is Behind the Smear Campaign?
The lawmaker believes these allegations are part of a coordinated attempt to discredit him, orchestrated by individuals with vested interests in the illicit fuel trade. “For the sake of posterity, I challenge the peddlers of this falsehood to provide verifiable evidence of these unfounded claims,” his rejoinder stated.
Investigations have revealed that some smuggling operations are linked to a notorious figure known as IBD Dende, who has allegedly used violence and intimidation against honest Customs officers. Hon. Whingan has repeatedly warned about such unchecked criminal activities, emphasising that they deepen economic hardship and joblessness in border areas.
A Commitment to Transparency and Development
Despite the allegations, Hon. Whingan remains steadfast in his commitment to his constituents. He reaffirmed his dedication to policies that support economic growth, job creation, and transparent governance in Badagry.
He also urged the public and media to approach such claims with scepticism and focus on factual, evidence-based reporting. “We must prioritise accountability and truth over politically motivated propaganda,” he said.
The lawmaker concluded by calling on stakeholders to work towards genuine reform in Nigeria’s border trade policies, ensuring that smuggling is tackled at the highest levels of authority rather than being weaponised for political attacks.
