Five Hidden Dangers of Using Expired Gas Cylinders

Five Hidden Dangers of Using Expired Gas Cylinders(Petroleumprice.ng)

As LPG adoption continues to rise across Nigeria, cylinder safety remains a serious concern. Many consumers, unaware of key guidelines and expiration rules, continue using old cylinders, putting lives and property at risk. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) emphasizes that steel LPG cylinders carry a 15-year lifespan and must be requalified every 5 years during that period. Ignoring these rules exposes users to hidden but dangerous risks.

    1. Structural Weakening Over Time

With repeated use, LPG cylinders constantly undergo expansion and contraction due to gas pressure. Over time, this cycle gradually stresses the metal. As the years go by, especially beyond the 15-year mark, the cylinder’s structural strength begins to degrade. Consequently, the metal walls become thinner and more fragile. As a result, these expired cylinders are far more likely to rupture, even under standard usage conditions.

    2. Internal Rust and Undetected Corrosion

Moisture, poor storage, and residual gas can gradually lead to internal rust buildup. Over time, this hidden corrosion weakens the cylinder from the inside out. Because the damage is not visible on the surface, many users unintentionally continue using cylinders that are structurally unsafe. Ultimately, this silent deterioration increases the risk of leaks, fire, or explosion during normal use.

    3. Worn Out Valves and Seals

As cylinders age, their valves and seals often become worn or damaged. Consequently, it becomes more difficult to control gas flow during use. In many cases, this results in slow, undetected gas leaks. Since these leaks may not produce a strong odour or visible signs, users remain unaware until it is too late, thereby increasing the risk of fire, suffocation, or even explosion.

    4. Violation of Safety Standards

Using an expired cylinder not only violates SON regulations but also puts users at legal and financial risk. In the event of an accident, insurance claims may be rejected due to non-compliance. To remain compliant, every cylinder must clearly display its manufacturing and requalification dates. Ignoring these markings and continuing to use expired equipment is both illegal and unsafe, ultimately endangering lives and property.

    5. Explosion Hazards Under Stress

Expired cylinders lack the structural strength found in certified and up-to-date models. As a result, they are far less capable of withstanding heat, impact, or pressure changes. If exposed to open flames, direct sunlight, or even a hard fall, they may burst violently. In such cases, the consequences can be fatal, particularly in enclosed spaces or residential areas where the impact spreads quickly.

    Final Thoughts

Cylinder expiration is not a myth. It is a clear safety guideline backed by science and enforced by SON. To stay safe, always inspect the manufacturing and requalification date on your cylinder. Replace units older than 15 years and have them requalified every 5 years. Gas safety begins with awareness and a safe home begins with a certified cylinder.
