The Federal Government has officially handed over 15 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to key transport unions, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).
The initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Clean Energy Transport Scheme, aimed at reducing the impact of fuel subsidy removal. Speaking at the handover ceremony in Abuja, Minister of Transportation Sen. Said Alkali explained that the project promotes cleaner, more affordable energy for transport operators and commuters alike.
Supporting Clean Energy and Affordable Transport
“These buses represent our commitment to empowering citizens while transitioning to a cleaner energy economy,” Alkali said. He added that CNG will cut transport costs, lower carbon emissions, and improve the overall efficiency of Nigeria’s transportation system.
He urged transport unions to maintain the buses properly and called on Nigerians to support the initiative, emphasising the long-term benefits of a sustainable transport system. “This is not just about today, it’s about creating a system that serves future generations,” Alkali noted.
Free Rides and More Buses on the Way
Programme Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, announced that Abuja residents would enjoy 40 days of free rides on the buses. After the free period, discounted fares will follow. He also confirmed plans to roll out more CNG buses in the coming months.
Transport Unions Commend the Initiative
RTEAN President Dr. Musa Mohammed praised the government’s efforts, highlighting the economic relief the buses will provide. “These buses will ease financial strain on families and support a greener environment,” he said, noting that CNG is a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels.
The government’s initiative underscores its commitment to supporting Nigerians during challenging economic times, while also advancing environmental sustainability and clean energy adoption.
