The federal government has celebrated achieving 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) in crude oil and condensate production, a milestone not reached for four years. Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, praised the achievement, calling it his “happiest day” since his appointment. He expressed optimism for reaching 2.5 million bpd by December.

This accomplishment follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive to boost oil production through intensified security efforts and stakeholder collaboration, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and Tantita Security Services, led by Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo). Lokpobiri attributed this increase to coordinated efforts against oil theft in the Niger Delta, noting improved security and deployment of new technology as critical factors.

NNPC’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari, acknowledged the production “war room” team’s role in sustaining output, with the goal now set to exceed two million bpd by year-end. Efforts include tighter security across pipelines, enhanced production facilities, and cross-agency support to reach long-term targets.

    Collaboration Key to Boosting Production

Tantita Security, pivotal in reducing oil theft, lauded the NNPC’s progress, affirming that enhanced security measures and technological advancements would support sustainable output growth. The achievement signals economic gains for Nigeria, potentially boosting federal revenue and stabilising the energy sector amid global demand fluctuations.

This commitment from both government and private entities marks a determined effort to position Nigeria as a leading oil producer in Africa and beyond, aiming to support economic growth and regional energy security.

    Outlook: Building Momentum

In a forecast for 2025, NNPC’s board anticipates further capacity expansions and potential output increases to three million bpd, underpinned by improved cash flow projections and strategic partnerships. With strengthened operational capacity, Nigeria is set to bolster its role as a regional energy leader, fulfilling both domestic and international demand.
