As the global demand for cleaner energy rises, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) continues to gain traction as a vital fuel for households and businesses. In Nigeria, this surge has led to the rapid expansion of LPG refilling stations. However, this growth has also created opportunities for fraudulent practices that compromise consumer safety and value. Therefore, recognizing and addressing these tactics is essential for protecting your purchase and ensuring transparency.

    Watch the Meter Closely

Before the refill begins, always confirm that the dispenser meter starts at “0.00”. Otherwise, you may unknowingly pay for gas you never received. If the meter isn’t reset, politely request a correction before allowing the refill to continue. By doing so, you prevent intentional overcharging.

    Insist on Accurate Weighing

When filling from bulk tanks, it is advisable to ask for your cylinder to be weighed both before and after the refill. This is because accurate weighing confirms that you receive exactly what you paid for. In addition, prefer stations that use calibrated digital scales and maintain transparent procedures.

    Avoid Distraction Tactics

Fraud often occurs when customers lose focus. Thus, during the refilling process, remain close to your cylinder and the attendant. To reduce the risk, avoid distractions and politely turn down conversations designed to divert your attention.

    Use Trusted and Branded Stations

Whenever possible, choose stations known for their integrity and compliance. Generally, branded or certified outlets are more likely to follow operational standards and reduce the risk of manipulation. Moreover, watch for visible licenses, compliance signs, and orderly practices.

    Report Suspicious Activity

If at any point you suspect foul play, document what you can, including receipts, short videos, or names of attendants. Then, report the incident to the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) or the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). By speaking up, you contribute to consumer protection and industry accountability.

    Final Tip

LPG fraud persists only when consumers remain unaware or passive. However, by staying alert and applying these preventive tips, you ensure a fair and secure refilling experience. Take action today: monitor meters, demand accurate weighing, choose certified stations, and report misconduct. Together, informed consumers can foster honesty across the LPG retail sector.
