The Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Mr. Devakumar Edwin, has highlighted the accomplishments of Dangote Refinery, contrasting its achievements with those of international oil companies (IOCs) like Shell, ExxonMobil, and Chevron. Speaking during a visit by the Senate Committee on Trade and Investment to the refinery complex in Lekki, Lagos, Edwin emphasised that the refinery represents a feat unmatched by any IOC in Nigeria.
Support from Lawmakers
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Trade and Investment, Senator Sadiq Umar, assured Dangote Refinery of legislative backing. Calling the project a “national asset,” Umar praised the refinery’s potential to boost Nigeria’s economy and reduce reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
“For us as legislators, we will do everything within our power to support this project. It is an investment not just for Dangote but for the entire country,” Umar stated.
Crude Imports Resumed
Despite its achievements, the refinery has faced challenges in securing crude oil supplies. Recently, the Dangote Refinery resumed crude imports from the United States to increase production capacity. This move comes after difficulties in obtaining adequate crude from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), even under the federal government’s naira-for-crude sales deal.
Impact on Nigeria’s Economy
The refinery is expected to significantly reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products, saving billions in foreign exchange annually. As the largest project of its kind in Africa, it promises to bolster domestic fuel supply, improve job creation, and attract further investments into the Nigerian oil and gas sector.
With full legislative support and increased crude availability, the Dangote Refinery could redefine Nigeria’s refining landscape and position the country as a major player in the global energy market.
This development demonstrates the potential of private sector initiatives to address long-standing gaps in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.
